Batman, the early years |

Does anyone remember a time when the having a career in the film or music industry required more then to merely be willing to be practically naked in public, and look nice on a cd cover/movie poster? You know, it used to require some kind of talent. Celebrities used to have to at least be able to act, but it was preferred that they be able to dance and sing as well. Today there are people that we call celebrities that I couldn't even tell you why they are. Take the lovely (?) Paris Hilton. She tries to do other things, but the poor girl doesn't have a clue. Why is she a celebrity? Oh right, she's an heiress, big friggin' whoop! That didn't require any special talent on her part, and she's not even in the royal family, so really, other then poorly digitally mastered attempts at a music career and an appearence on a bad horror flick, and the stupidest reality show of all time, there's no reason she's a celebrity other then people take pictures of her and the public feeds their addiction for gossip. Ok, so I didn't mean to go on that little rant, but now that it's out I geel a little better. :o) The reason I thought of this today was b/c my friend Kim and I got together and watched the Newsies. I was thrilled to find someone who not only had heard of this movie (b/c everytime I go ask for it at the video store I get a blank deer-caught-in-the-headlights-what-do-I-do-now look from the person across the counter), but she also loves it AND owns it! SCORE!! Of course that's not the only reason I love her, but it's a testament to her good taste in video entertainment. Once again, yes, this movie is a musical feeding my craving to see a good musical number in public one day. We got to talking while watching Christian Bale dancing around (Oprah calls it multi-tasking) that you don't see a lot of actors or actresses around these days who actually can act, dance, and sing to the level of quality that they used to require. Now I'm not saying we have absolutely no talent in our celebrities now (as long as Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Liam Nieson, Denzel Washington, and others are around, there will always be talent to be admired), but somehow the level of expectations have been lowered quite substantially. Anyway, so that is want I did today. I also had to try to find a way to beat the system in the optomitrics department today, but that rant will be saved for another blogging day. Although you have all been such good little blog friends that you may deserve more then one entry a week, wouldn't you say? ;o) Here are some pics of the beautiful, young Christian Bale, enjoy.....

I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, Gary and I were just discussing Miss Hilton yesterday and the fact that there's really no reason for her to be famous.
I don't know how many times I've gone into the movie store recently and come out empty-handed. Is it impossible to make a good movie in this day and age? I can't even remember the last time I went to the theatre. Although, that new movie with Christian Bale looks like the most tempting treat in recent months! :)

I LOVE Newsies and Swing Kids! I get your frustration though. I've been noticing the same thing in print. It is notoriously difficult to get published, yet so many of the books published these days are lousy. Maybe Paris Hilton will write a novel next. Or has she done that already?

I was just thinking that we should get a large group of people to plan and rehearse a "spontaneous" musical scene. We can plan to be all in the same part of town, and then someone will give the signal. Music will play from carefully concealed speakers and we will all sing and dance in unison through the streets. YES!
